Josie Gould

Contemporary Landscape Paintings

Josie Gould loves to paint ‘en plein’ air in the wild places of Dartmoor and the coast, capturing the poetry and mystery of a landscape she has known since childhood.

‘I aim to catch the fleeting, sensory, poetic qualities of light and colour and the excitement of feelings that the elements bring. Returning home to Devon after a career travelling worldwide as a professional chef, sailor and scuba diver I now find that immersing myself in the depths of Dartmoor reveals a similarly stimulating interplay of qualities of light, colour and movement that I love. Becoming aware of the spontaneous rhythms and tempos of the pulse of the land in this way, I reconnect with the mystical experiences and exuberance of vitality that are abundant in these wild places and in my memories. Catching the moments which most affect and move me I aim to interweave and evoke these often subtle sometime powerful qualities, the vitality and zest of life, into my paintings.

Using mixed media and oils with whatever is at hand frees me up to spontaneously evoke joyful and exuberant moments in the landscape.’
